The Richard and Rebecca Sappington Scholarship
In Pre-1776 American Colonial History
This scholarship is administered on behalf of the Order of the Sappington Colonial History Scholarship Committee, which encourages members of all academic communities to seek out worthy applicants for the annual award.
Eligibility
The Richard and Rebecca Sappington Scholarship will be awarded to a university upper level (junior/senior) or graduate level student participating in an American History project of pre-1776 colonial history. Applicants must be citizens of the United States of America.
Only those applications completed correctly and submitted in one package will be considered. Incorrect applications are discarded and no records will be returned. Scholarships are awarded regardless of race, religion, sex or national origin. Personal photographs must not be submitted. No affiliation with the Order of the First Families of Maryland is necessary. Applicants will be notified of the results of this competition after a final decision has been made by the Scholarship Committee.
A one-time $1,000.00 Scholarship will be awarded, based on academic excellence, originality of thought and commitment to the field of American Colonial History. The committee reserves the right to use essays that result from this competition for inclusion in the OFFMD Newsletter.
The Scholarship Chairman must receive applications by the deadline of the first day of May in the scholarship year. The committee will make every effort to announce the winner of the award by the first day of June of the scholarship year.
Application Components
Letters of recommendation from the following: 1.) Faculty; 2.) Project Supervisor; 3.) Personal Reference from those who are familiar with the applicant's work. Letter may cover the applicant's ability, work habits, integrity, character, but at least one must include reference to the applicant's involvement in the field of Colonial History.
Applicant must prepare a statement of 1000 words or less, the nature and degree of his or her scholarship, background interest and ability in Pre-1776 Colonial History. The essay should explain how this project relates to Colonial history.
Resume of List of Scholastic Achievements, extra-curricular activities, honors received, or other significant accomplishments on one side of 8-1/2" x 11" paper.
Application Package should be stapled or paper clipped in the top, left-hand conrner. Number of pages in the packet must not exceed 15. The package should be mailed by postal or Courier mail. The deadline is the first day of April.
In order for the OFFMD Chairperson to acknowledge the receipt of your application you must include a self-addressed, stamped postcard. ONLY winners are notified of judges' decisions following approval by the Scholarship Committee.
